Cancún vs Playa del Carmen: What I’d choose (and Why)
If you’re planning a trip to Mexico’s Caribbean, chances are you’ve already asked yourself the big question: Should I go to Cancún or Playa del Carmen?
Which is better? And which one fits my travel style?
And honestly? There’s no single right answer.
They’re both extremely popular destinations, they’re relatively close to each other, and yet they feel very different once you’re actually there. The right choice depends on the kind of trip you’re planning, your budget, and what you expect from your vacation.
I’ve traveled to this area several times, and because I’m notoriously indecisive, I’ve stayed in both Cancún and Playa del Carmen. So instead of repeating generic advice, I’m sharing my real, on-the-ground experience comparing them point by point:
- beaches
- accommodations
- nightlife and overall vibe
- excursions and activities

My goal is simple: help you choose the destination that actually fits your trip.

Where are Cancún and Playa del Carmen located?
Let’s start with geography.
Both Cancún and Playa del Carmen are located on the Yucatán Peninsula, along Mexico’s Caribbean coast.
They’re about 43 miles apart.
Playa del Carmen is part of what’s known as the Riviera Maya, while Cancún technically is not, something that doesn’t matter much on paper, but does influence the type of experience you’ll have.
Getting There
Cancún International Airport is about 20 minutes from the Hotel Zone. Super quick and easy.
Getting from the airport to Playa del Carmen takes about 1 hour by car or transfer. It’s still a very straightforward highway drive.
There’s also the Tulum Airport, but it mainly receives flights from the U.S. and within Mexico.

Which destination has better beaches?
Beaches in Cancún
This is where Cancún really shines.
White, powdery sand. Turquoise water. Wide beaches. That classic Caribbean look most people imagine when they think “Cancún”
Some of my favorite beaches:
- Playa Delfines (where the Cancún sign is)
- Playa Marlín, right in the Hotel Zone
- Playa Chac Mool, even though it’s near the party area
These beaches do have waves, which some people love and others don’t.
If you prefer calmer water, I love the beach in front of Kin Ha Hotel and InterContinental Presidente, hands down some of the best swimming spots in Cancún.
A great way to explore Cancún safely and cheaply is the hop-on hop-off tourist bus, which stops at major beaches and shopping areas. You can book it here.
One thing to keep in mind: Cancún’s Hotel Zone is very urban. High-rise hotels, big buildings, lots of concrete. If you want something quieter and more open, Costa Mujeres, just north of Cancún, is worth considering.
Beaches in Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen’s beaches aren’t as visually stunning as Cancún’s, but what they lack in drama, they make up for in vibe, especially away from downtown.
The central beaches didn’t impress me on my last trip. They were crowded, loud, and in some areas the beach felt squeezed between buildings and the water.
But once you move a bit away from the center, things change:
- Coco Beach
- Playa 88
- Playacar (to the south)
Even Mamitas Beach, though still central, felt nicer for spending the day.
What I like about Playa del Carmen is how easy it is to move between beaches without feeling surrounded by massive buildings.
✨ My take: If you want jaw-dropping water color and don’t mind a more urban setting, Cancún wins. If you prefer a lower-key vibe, easier beach hopping, and fewer high-rises, Playa del Carmen might be a better fit.
Accommodations: Where should you stay?
Cancún
Cancún is all about big resorts, many of them all-inclusive.
If your dream vacation is:
- waking up steps from the beach
- unlimited food and drinks
- pools, spas, and entertainment on site
Then staying in Cancún makes total sense.
There are smaller hotels and guesthouses, but they’re mostly located in downtown Cancún, far from the beaches.
One hotel I personally loved for its beach, location, and services was the JW Marriott in the Hotel Zone.
Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen offers much more variety.
You’ll find:
- hostels
- boutique hotels
- apartments
- resorts (especially in Playacar)
The big difference is that accommodations feel more integrated into local life.
One important warning: if you’re not traveling for nightlife, be careful with your location. Some central streets are very noisy at night. We made that mistake once and barely slept.

If you want a resort vibe without Cancún’s Hotel Zone, Playacar is a great alternative.
✨ My opinion: Both destinations have great hotels. This category alone shouldn’t decide your trip, the difference really comes down to the overall experience you want.
Nightlife and overall vibe
Nightlife in Cancún
Cancún is famous for its nightlife.
Huge clubs like Coco Bongo and Mandala, plus bars and restaurants concentrated around Playa Forum.
If partying is a priority, Cancún delivers, big time.
Nightlife in Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen used to feel more relaxed, but that’s changed.
The area around 12th Street is packed with bars and clubs, including La Vaquita, Clandestino, Coco Bongo and Mandala as well.
If you’re looking for nightlife, Playa del Carmen has it too.
Excursions & Activities
From Cancún
Cancún is the perfect base for visiting nearby islands:
- Isla Mujeres
- Isla Contoy
- Holbox (farther, but doable)
Chichén Itzá is also popular, though it involves a long drive.
Some great day tours from Cancún:
If I had to recommend just one island experience, it would be Isla Mujeres + Isla Contoy. Contoy is absolutely stunning, far more pristine than Isla Mujeres.
From Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen is incredibly convenient if you want to explore the Riviera Maya.
From Playa del Carmen, you’ll have a lot more places nearby, which makes a big difference if your plan is to actually explore and not spend half your trip sitting on a bus.
Cenotes, eco-parks like Xcaret and Xel-Há, the ruins of Tulum and Cobá, plus the direct ferry to Cozumel are all much closer from Playa del Carmen. And honestly, there’s a reason so many people consider it one of the best bases in the Riviera Maya.
That said, islands like Isla Mujeres or Isla Contoy are farther away from Playa del Carmen, and Chichén Itzá is pretty much the same distance as from Cancún.
Some of the best tours you can do from Playa del Carmen include:
No matter which ones you choose, don’t skip the Tulum ruins. They’re one of my favorite places in the Riviera Maya, the location alone makes them completely unique.
✨ My take: Playa del Carmen is simply more practical if you want to do excursions around the Riviera Maya. If your trip is more about moving around and seeing different places, Playa del Carmen makes everything easier. If, on the other hand, your plan is mostly relaxing or doing just one or two island trips, Cancún works perfectly fine.
Is Cancún or Playa del Carmen cheaper?
This is one of the questions I get asked the most, and the short answer is: Playa del Carmen is generally cheaper, especially if you’re not staying at an all-inclusive resort.
Playa del Carmen offers:
- more budget-friendly hotels close to the beach
- tons of affordable restaurants
- easier access to nearby attractions, which lowers tour prices
In Cancún, if you want to save money, you’ll usually have to stay downtown, far from the beach.
That said, if you’re planning to stay at an all-inclusive resort, prices between Cancún and Playa del Carmen tend to be very similar. In that case, cost alone shouldn’t influence your decision too much.
✨ My experience: Traveling independently, Playa del Carmen stretched my budget much further. Resorts level the playing field.
Is Playa del Carmen or Cancun safer?
Both destinations are generally safe, especially in tourist areas like:
- Cancún’s Hotel Zone
- central Playa del Carmen
- Playacar
That said, there have been occasional incidents in recent years related to conflicts between police and criminal groups. These situations are not common in tourist zones, but it’s important to stay informed and use common sense.
Personally, we never felt unsafe in either destination. The only place where I felt slightly uncomfortable at night was downtown Cancún, but nothing happened.
That doesn’t mean crime doesn’t exist. It just means it didn’t affect us directly, and I think it’s important to be honest about that.
Basic safety tips
- avoid walking empty streets late at night
- don’t wear expensive jewelry or watches
- don’t leave valuables in rental cars or unattended on the beach
- avoid buying anything illegal
- be cautious with taxis (overcharging is common)
If you rent a car, be aware that police may sometimes try to issue questionable fines. It didn’t happen to us, but it’s something many travelers report.
Health & Travel Insurance
Drink bottled water and always travel with medical insurance. Healthcare in Mexico can be excellent, but it’s expensive if you pay out of pocket.

Which destination should you choose?
Choose Cancún if:
- you want all-inclusive resorts
- you love big beaches with turquoise water
- nightlife is a major priority
- you’re traveling for a short stay
- island hopping is your main plan
Choose Playa del Carmen if:
- you want to explore the Riviera Maya
- you prefer flexibility over resort life
- you’re traveling on a budget
- you like walking everywhere
- you’re traveling solo or backpacking
Can you combine Cancún and Playa del Carmen?
Absolutely! and I highly recommend it if you have at least one week.
This is exactly what we’ve done every time we visited.
A great split:
- 3 nights in Cancún → beaches, one island, nightlife
- 4 nights in Playa del Carmen → cenotes, ruins, snorkeling
This way, you don’t have to choose, you get the best of both!
