Choosing where to stay in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico can feel overwhelming. It’s not just about finding a nice hotel. There’s one extra factor that really matters: picking a safe area to stay.
During my road trip through Mexico, safety was always my top priority when choosing accommodations. Before booking anything, I researched which neighborhoods were considered safe (and which ones weren’t). If a hotel was close to an area that felt sketchy, I crossed it off my list, even if I liked it. My goal was always the same: being able to walk around the neighborhood comfortably and without stress.
Puerto Vallarta ended up being one of the most beautiful destinations I visited in the state of Jalisco, so in this guide I’ll walk you through the best areas to stay in Puerto Vallarta, breaking down the pros and cons of each neighborhood to help you choose the one that best fits your travel style and enjoy it as much as I did.

Best Area to Stay in Puerto Vallarta
Puerto Vallarta sits along a beautiful bay on Mexico’s Pacific coast. Personally, I think the best place to stay is between the beach and about 300 meters inland, where there’s always movement, restaurants, shops, and people around at all hours of the day.
That said, this description covers a very large stretch of the bay, so to make things easier, I’ve divided it into five distinct neighborhoods, each with a totally different vibe.
Listed from north to south, the best areas to stay in Puerto Vallarta are:
- Hotel Zone
- Downtown Puerto Vallarta
- Romantic Zone (Old Vallarta)
- Conchas Chinas
- Mismaloya
Bonus: Nuevo Vallarta (technically not Puerto Vallarta, but often confused with it)

Where to Stay in Puerto Vallarta: Neighborhood Guide
Downtown Puerto Vallarta (El Centro)
Downtown Puerto Vallarta is the historic heart of the city. This is where you’ll find Plaza de Armas, the iconic Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe, and most importantly, the Malecón.
Walking along the Malecón at sunset is one of the best things to do in Puerto Vallarta. This oceanfront promenade stretches for almost a mile and is lined with sculptures like the Seahorse and Los Delfines, plus the famous Los Arcos.
On the southern edge of downtown, right next to the river, you’ll find Río Cuale Market, the city’s main flea market. Downstairs you can shop for crafts and jewelry, while upstairs there are casual food stalls, perfect for a cheap local lunch.
This is a great area to stay if you’re looking for budget-friendly accommodation and want to be close to everything.

Romantic Zone (Old Vallarta)
The Romantic Zone, also known as Old Vallarta, is just south of downtown, across the Cuale River. This is one of my favorite areas in Puerto Vallarta thanks to its restaurants, nightlife, art galleries, and bohemian vibe.
Here you’ll find Playa Los Muertos, the most famous beach in Puerto Vallarta, along with the modern pier that’s free and open to the public. At the southern end of the beach there’s a small rocky hill called El Púlpito. You can climb it via a short staircase from Playa Los Muertos, the views are beautiful, although I’ll admit it gave me a bit of vertigo.
Another must-see is Lázaro Cárdenas Park, decorated with colorful mosaics and always buzzing with life. If you’re visiting between November and May, stop by the Olas Altas Market on Saturday mornings.
Most accommodations in the Romantic Zone are small hotels or boutique stays, so if you’re looking for a big all-inclusive resort, this probably isn’t the best area for you.

Hotel Zone Puerto Vallarta
The Hotel Zone is north of downtown and is where you’ll find longer beaches, shopping malls, and large resorts.
Plaza Caracol is one of the main malls here, but I personally preferred La Isla Shopping Village, an open-air mall with fountains that’s great for shopping or just strolling around.
As the name suggests, this area is home to most of Puerto Vallarta’s big hotels and all-inclusive resorts. This is where we stayed during our family road trip, at this beachfront hotel near Playa Las Glorias.
If you’re looking for Cancún-style all-inclusive resorts, this is one of the best areas to stay in Puerto Vallarta.
⛵ Just north of the Hotel Zone is the Maritime Terminal, where tours depart to places like Marietas Islands or sunset cruises with dinner and shows.

Conchas Chinas
South of the Romantic Zone, you’ll find Conchas Chinas, a quieter and more upscale area with luxury residences, small coves, and hotels with stunning ocean views.
This is an excellent choice if you’re looking for a high-end stay away from the crowds, but still relatively close to downtown. Most hotels here are smaller and more exclusive, rather than large chain resorts.
I’d only recommend staying here if you’re renting a car. Otherwise, one of the more central neighborhoods will be more convenient.

Mismaloya Beach
Mismaloya became famous after the movie The Night of the Iguana and is one of my favorite areas thanks to its lush, jungle-like setting. That said, the large hotel right on the beach does take away some of its original charm.
It’s located about 7 miles south of downtown, near the fishing village of Boca de Tomatlán, so having a car is essential.
This area is best if you’re looking for peace, privacy, and nature, and don’t mind being far from the main attractions.
The only beachfront hotel in Mismaloya is the Barceló, an all-inclusive resort. Other nearby hotels are upscale and more expensive, like Hilton Vallarta Riviera. A more budget-friendly option nearby is Casa Iguana.

Nuevo Vallarta vs Puerto Vallarta: What’s the Difference?
This is a very common question: Is Nuevo Vallarta part of Puerto Vallarta?
Short answer: No. They’re not even in the same state.
Puerto Vallarta is everything I’ve mentioned so far (except Mismaloya, which is just outside the city).
Nuevo Vallarta is located about 9 miles north of the Hotel Zone, across the Ameca River, which separates Jalisco from Nayarit.
Nuevo Vallarta is part of the Riviera Nayarit and is home to newer developments, wide beaches, and large international resort chains. The beaches here are flatter and less deep, and the mountains sit farther back from the coast.
If nightlife, restaurants, and local atmosphere are important to you, Puerto Vallarta is the better choice. Nuevo Vallarta is more about relaxing at a resort.
Is Puerto Vallarta Safe?
Puerto Vallarta is considered a relatively safe destination for tourists.
At night, it’s best to stick to well-lit areas like the Malecón or main avenues and avoid wandering down empty streets you don’t know. As in any tourist destination, keep an eye on your belongings, especially in crowded places like markets.
Personally, I never felt unsafe in Puerto Vallarta, not downtown, not on the beach, and not walking along the Malecón. I just used common sense and stayed out during reasonable hours.
💯 One of the most important safety tips: travel with good travel insurance. It’s better to have it and not need it than the other way around. Trust me on this.

Puerto Vallarta offers more variety in terms of neighborhoods, nightlife, and local atmosphere. Nuevo Vallarta is a good option if you’re specifically looking for large, modern resorts similar to those in the Hotel Zone of Puerto Vallarta.
You’ll find some of the best budget-friendly hotels and guesthouses in Downtown Puerto Vallarta, especially close to the Malecón.
The Hotel Zone, Downtown, and the Romantic Zone are all considered relatively safe for tourists. Areas like Conchas Chinas and Mismaloya, just outside the city, are also safe and very quiet.
Yes, Puerto Vallarta is generally considered safe for solo travelers, including solo female travelers. As always, use common sense, stay in well-known areas, and avoid empty streets late at night.

The Romantic Zone is the top choice for couples. It has a lively but charming atmosphere, great restaurants, beach clubs, and nightlife. If you’re looking for something more exclusive and quiet, Conchas Chinas is also a great option for a romantic getaway with stunning ocean views.
