Top 5 best beaches in San Andrés, Colombia you can’t miss

What are the best beaches in San Andrés, Colombia?. If you are thinking about it to organize your visit to this beautiful Caribbean island, you’ve come to the right place!. I have also wondered when i didn’t know how good San Andres beaches were, that’s why in this article I will tell you which are the most beautiful ones.

Exploring San Andres beaches

The beaches in San Andres are located on the north and east coast, as the south and west do not have any sand but coral stone. The sand is usually mixed with pieces of coral, so I recommend using water shoes.

I would like to remind you something that I have already mentioned in the article of the best things to do on the island: beaches in San Andrés are not known for being long. In fact, the longest ones do not exceed a mile in length.

If you enjoy walking for hours on the beach, maybe destinations in the Dominican Republic would be a better alternative. But I think it is better to go and then have your own opinion.

On the other hand, the water has a fascinating color. I don’t know if it has 7 colors as they say, but it really has a beautiful diversity of shades, which I have not seen elsewhere.

Top 5 best beaches in San Andrés you should visit!

1. Spratt Bight Beach, the main beach in San Andrés

Spratt Bight, also known as Bahía Sardina, is the name given to the main centrally-located beach in San Andrés Island.

Located on the northeast coast, this mile-long beach is one of the longest, busiest and most beautiful on the island. White sand, the “sea of seven colors” and views of Johnny Cay in the distance.

The boardwalk Spratt Way goes from end to end and walking along it is an interesting plan for the sunset.

Because of its beauty and being close to downtown and restaurants, the best place to look for accommodation in San Andres is near this beach.

🚩 If you’re looking for an all-inclusive hotel, I like the ocean views at the Decameron Aquarium, but if you’re searching for something more affordable in this area, this is an excellent alternative.

2. Cocoplum beach, maybe the best beach in San Andres Island

About 6 kilometers south of downtown, Cocoplum beach is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. It is about 700 meters long, and perhaps this is the kind of beach one expects on a Caribbean island: white sand, coconut trees and the sea a little rougher than on the main beach.

If you don’t plan to walk around downtown every night, staying at this beachfront hotel would be a very good option. On the other hand, if your idea is to go downtown often, I would not recommend it, since the transfers at night would be more complicated. However, I recommend 100% that one day you go to Cocoplum beach and spend the day there.

3. Rocky Cay

Rocky Cay beach is ideal for getting into the sea with the water at your waist. Here is the beach club of the Decameron hotels and there are some bars where you can have a drink.

The sea is calm, shallow and transparent. Walking with caution about 200 meters you could reach a small islet, Rocky Cay. After the hurricane it was deeper and it became necessary to swim or wear a life jacket to reach the cay.

From the beach you can see the famous San Andres shipwreck very close.

4. Johnny Cay

The beach in Johnny Cay Island is about 10 minutes by boat from San Andres and it is one of the most beautiful. It meets all the requirements to classify it as a paradise, although in recent years it has become too crowded.

Visiting Johnny Cay is a great thing to do in San Andres, but I recommend you avoid doing it during the weekends.

🌴 The excursion to Johnny Cay has a really good price, book it in advance from here.

5. San Luis beach

It is an extensive beach of more than 1 km and one of the most famous in San Andres, because the Decameron San Luis is located here in its southern area.

I don’t like too much the beach in the area of the hotel, but further north, near the restaurant Donde Francesca, is much nicer and pleasant to walk or enjoy the beach.

You can visit the beaches in San Andres island on your own by renting a scooter or buggy here.

Other beaches in San Andrés (if 5 is not enough)

San Andres has more beaches than the five I mentioned before, but the reality is that I do not find them too attractive. In many blogs you will find long lists of beaches and you might think that they are all wonderful, and the truth is that they are not (in fact many descriptions do not match reality at all, but that is another topic, more linked to websites that write about places where they have never been).

However there are a few other beaches in San Andres that are not the best, but for some reason you might like them or maybe your accommodation in the island is close to some of these beaches, so I will mention them with a brief description. If you need more information, leave me a comment at the end of the article and I will try to help you.

To avoid making mistakes when choosing the area of your hotel, I will soon publish an article about the best areas to stay in San Andres.

Hotel Decameron Marazul Beach

It is a beach of around 100 meters that is open to those staying at the Marazul hotel or any Decameron hotel in San Andres, and according to my point of view, it has advantages and disadvantages.

Let’s start with the cons. It is not a nice beach as it is a mangrove beach. In fact, it is very close to the Old Point Mangroves National Park. So the colors of the water are not as beautiful as in the best beaches of San Andres.

What are the advantages? If you stay at Marazul, besides sleeping in one of the best accommodations on the island, you will have direct access to an almost private beach, something that is not common in San Andres. There is also a pier with a very nice bar.

Charquitos beach

To the south of Playa San Luis, this beach is characterized by a barrier of coral stone a few meters from the shore, which protects from the waves. Depending on the tide, pools of clear, warm water are formed where you can get in.

It is quiet and ideal to go with children, although there is no shade. This is a beach that could have been in the Top 5 best beaches of San Andres.

Piscinita

For me La Piscinita is not a beach, but there are people who consider it as such. This is a natural pool, ideal for snorkeling and swimming, but not for use as a beach itself because the shore is not sandy, but coral elevated from sea level.
